Re: "Close to Storks" project

Hello!

This season will be the 7th successive season of the „Close to Storks“ project – based on the Internet transmission from the White Stork Ciconia ciconia nest in Przygodzice village near Ostrów Wielkopolski in Poland, in Barycz river valley, on the border of Natura 2000 Special Protected Area „Barycz Valley“. The view of the nest you can see on www.bociany.ec.pl

We are expecting arrival of our storks in these days, in the end of March. During 6 seasons of the project (2006-2010) the earlier day of their arriving was 24th March 2010, when both storks (male and female) arrived. Let’s observe, when they will arrive this year!

best regards and good luck in your observations!

The Storks ...are coming!
(you can singing it on the melody of brilliant and important song „The Saints Are Coming“ by U2 and Green Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seGhTWE98DU

Hello!

On 24th March 2012 the first White Storks were observed on two nests in Ostrów Wielkopolski district in Poland. See more details in Polish on www.pwg.otop.org.pl. One of these nests, whrer two storks were observved yesterday and today, is located in Raczyce village, 3 km only from the nest in Przygodzice village, which you can see on-line on  www.bociany.ec.pl.

Today, together with a team from PwG OTOP, we observed one White Stork flying 1 km from the nest in Przygodzice and one Black Stork soaring upon Przygodzice Ponds and neighbouring forest - both these observations are the earliest one of these species in Przygodzice community this year.

We are expecting arrival of storks on this nest in consecutive days, in the end of March.

best regards and good luck in your observations!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Today (5th April) the second stork appeared on the nest in Przygodzice Usually males come first and females come after them but this year Przygoda was quicker than her partner. The male we can watch on www.bociany.ec.pl now is not the same we were watching last year because Dziedzic (male ocupied the nest in 2010 and 2011) had a ring on his leg and now none of tne storks has it.

Now we can watch them mate and we are waiting for the first egg to be laid

Re: "Close to Storks" project

We have the first egg of the Przygodzice White Stork breeding season 2012! Przygoda laid it last night, 8th April, Easter Sunday (but only just!), a little while before 22:55 hours local time.

The first viewing of the egg by both proud parents has been captured on this short film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv6xa1CO … e=youtu.be

Watch how, at 21 seconds into the film, Dziedzic stands scratching his head over this happy Easter event in his nest.

All our members and guests are invited to keep watching for the second and subsequent eggs on www.bociany.ec.pl.

Happy viewing and a happy Easter Monday to all!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Tonight, about 22:11 hours local time, Przygoda laid the second egg!

Photos of the event as it happened can be seen here:  http://www.bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/vi … 831#p36831

The weather forecast for the area states that the expected temperature at night is about +6 degrees Celsius,  no rain. Since yesterday both parents have busied themselves, during daytime, with lining the nest and surrounding their new egg with extra soft grassy material for warmth and comfort.

We encourage all forum users and guests to keep watching the life of the nest on www.bociany.ec.pl

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Today, Thursday 12 April, sometime between 20:30 and 20:40 hours local time, Przygoda laid her third egg of the season!    She is clearly following the after-dark-laying pattern. The third egg arrived some 46 hours after the second one.

The photo in the link below (courtesy of viewer wladek12) shows the first clear public viewing of the three eggs:
http://www.bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/vi … 904#p36904

- as does this short film (courtesy of viewer Barbarka):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEhZLAeX … e=youtu.be

Just now, at 21:18, both storks are on the nest, one sitting on the eggs and one grooming itself before settling down for the night. The weather appears dry and a bit windy, but overnight temperatures as low as 0 degrees C are forecast for the region.  Keep those eggs well covered, storks!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Saturday 14 April 2012
12:10

Still just three eggs in the nest  - so far, no additions since Thursday night.  This morning started very misty and foggy, but by midday the weather in Przygodzice appears bright and dry, and the temperatures for the area oscillate around 12 degrees C.

Since yesterday both storks, but especially Dziedzic, have been increasingly busy building up the nest and making improvements: the perimeter is being reinforced with new dry twigs and small branches, and the central area where the storks take turns sitting on the eggs is being lined and surrounded with a low wall od new soft hay and other grassy materials. When the new storks hatch, this is going to be their nursery.

We encourage you to watch the developments live on www.bociany.ec.pl.  Who knows, you may be the first person to see the fourth egg!  If this happens, please post your observation here.

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Egg no. 5 is here!

It was laid last night, Monday to Tuesday 16 to 17 April, some time between 21:14 and 00:47 hours in the morning.  At the time, the camera's night-time infrared facility was off, and all our faithful "night-owl" viewers (who, sadly, lack an owl's night vision) watching the nest had a most frustrating time trying to work out what was happening from the dark and very indistinct picture.

Fortunately, the repair crew came up to scratch, even so late at night, and corrected the problem as soon as was possible. We are grateful for their effort.

The first public viewing after the night image was restored took place at 00:47 hours on Tuesday morning.

You can see it here (film courtesy of KrystynaB):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jO6HPaea … e=youtu.be
It is amusing to see Dziedzic stretch his wings proudly over the fruits of his and his mate's joint eforts . The small dark object seen bouncing around just off-centre of the picture is our resident spider, Tekla, who has chosen to spin her web across the camera lens.

Photographs taken since last night can be seen in this thread:
http://www.bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/vi … d=616&p=11
It is nice to see that the sun is shining in Przygodzice and that the wind appears to have eased off. The temperature in the area is around 7 degrees C.

We do not have the exact time when the egg was laid, which may be unfortunate and frustrating for reasons of our nest statistics, but the most important thing now is to hope that all eggs hatch successfully and that another brood of Przygodzice storks is successfully raised. Fingers crossed!

We encourage all stork lovers to keep watching at www.bociany.ec.pl . Happy viewing!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

It is high time for an update of what is happening in the nest.

Przygoda and Dziedzic are proving to be a very good and devoted couple. They have been grooming each other, defending the nest together from intruders, and generally tightening their intimate bond as a breeding pair. Also, in addition to their regular egg-sitting duties, at which they each take equal turns, they have been busy renovating the structure of the nest and lining it with more soft material in preparation for the hatching of their young from the five eggs Przygoda has laid. This should be happening very soon, as the first egg was laid on 8th April, that is 29 days ago, and the average interval between laying and hatching is between 30 and 35 days.

So we can expect the first young birds to hatch in the next few days. We invite all our viewing guests from outside Poland to watch the nest particularly carefully this week.  If you happen to be the first person watching to see the signs of an egg cracking and a baby stork getting ready to hatch, please let us know immediately in this thread, with a photo if possible, and we will post the news of your observation in the Polish-language thread as well.

Also, please feel free to post any other relevant observations and questions here. This forum is designed for your active participation!

Happy viewing on www.bociany.ec.pl.!

Greetings from Anka

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Sunday 13 May 2012, 11:10 hours in Poland

The first two stork chicks hatched in the Przygodzice nest last night!

The first signs of a crack in one egg appeared before 21:00 hours local time, and by about 21:15 several viewers reported the sighting of the first hatchling. At 21:27 the little stork was already outside its eggshell.

The hatching took place 34 days after the first egg was laid.

The second chick followed just under two hours later, and was free of the eggshell by 23:35 hours. Przygoda soon tidied out the nest, and both parents continued sitting on the nest for the rest of the night, keeping the new arrivals snug and warm.

The latest recorded viewing was about two hours ago. Both chicks are active and chirping already!  The weather appears sunny and mild.

More news soon

Greetings and good luck to the chicks, and to the ones still to hatch!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

13 May

The third stork chick got out of his/her egg at 19:41 hours today - 35 days since the first egg was laid.

You can see the three chicks in this short film,  courtesy of our viewer/moderator iganka:

The hatching of baby storks is the beginning of a very exciting time in our storks' nest, so we hope our viewers take the time to watch the storks in Przygodzice on www.bociany.ec.pl as often and as regularly as possible.

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Wednesday 16th May

The fourth chick hatched successfully yesterday morning, 15th May, at 07:28 hours.
Both parents are now increasingly busy gathering and bringing food for the youngsters, in addition to taking turns with nest-cleaning duties in between sitting on the one remaining egg and keeping the four babies snug, warm and protected.
So far, we're still waiting for the fifth chick to arrive.

Yesterday evening the Przygodzice nest featured in a popular news and commentary program ("Teleexpress") on Polish Television . Our storks are quite famous throughout Poland, and immediately following the program there was a big surge of interest from the viewing public, with dozens and dozens of new guests visiting our site www.bociany.ec.pl.

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Thursday, May 17th

The fifth stork chick is here!

It hatched this morning, at about 5:50 local time.

This completes the set for this year - all five eggs hatched successfully.  The new youngster is still tiny and so it will have to fight to catch up with its siblings.  Fingers crossed, good luck to the new arrival and to all in the Przygodzice stork family.

And happy watching on www.bociany.ec.pl !  Do not hesitate to write your observations here if you are a registered forum user - wherever in the world you are watching the Przygodzice storks from, we would love to hear from you!

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Tuesday, 5th June 2012

A lot has been happening in the nest since our last post. The young storks are growing, developing their new flight feathers, and learning to use their legs and their wings in addition to just opening their beaks for the food! And the parents are very busy feeding and protecting them in the nest.

As frequent visitors to the site must have noticed, now we have only three young chicks surviving - sadly, the two youngest and weakest hatchlings were, in the past few weeks, killed and removed from the nest by the parents. This, unfortunately but necessarily, was dictated by the parents' natural instinct which tells the adult birds when a chick is unlikely to survive, either because of sickness or some birth defects or because there is not enough food to ensure survival of all young in the nest.

These happenings caused some very understandable distress among our viewers.  We sympathize with their feelings, and we ourselves were very much saddened by these events, but we also need to stress that the basic principle of our project is to observe the birds in their natural environment and natural life cycles, with as little human intervention as possible.  Our project does not create a ZOO-like environment where animals are held in captivity and therefore the keepers are responsible for all their welfare. Having said that, sometimes we will intervene when a disaster can be prevented,  but only after very careful consideration and advice from our in-house expert ornithologists.  This happened several times in the past when there was a danger of young birds suffocating on some man-made materials, or when an adult was badly injured in a fight with another bird.  However, in this case, there was nothing to be done - only to try and understand that Mother Nature sometimes appears cruel, but it is to ensure the best possible survival of healthy individuals to secure the continued existence of the species. Similar things are likely to be happening in thousands of nests all over the country which are not being monitored.  In the end, a great number of the healthiest and fittest birds do survive and thrive. We still consider ourselves very privileged to be able to watch the storks in Przygodzice and take part as observers in their life, gaining new understanding of both the sometimes inevitable dramas and all the happy developments in the nest.

So we watched and recorded the events in the nest with a heavy heart, but also with the hope that now the three remaining chicks, who are growing at a good rate and becoming stronger with every day,  have an increasingly good chance to survive until adulthood and eventually to breed and raise their own young.

Please continue as our guests, taking pleasure in watching what is happening in the nest at www.bociany.ec.pl

Re: "Close to Storks" project

INVITATION - PLEASE NOTE - INVITATION

The Seventh Annual General "Close to Storks" Meeting in Przygodzice and the Barycz Valley, 27-29 July 2012

After consultations with the Przygodzice Parish Culture Centre, we can now announce the date of the next general annual meeting in Przygodzice for all Polish (and foreign!) stork lovers.

It will be held over the last weekend in July, Friday 27th to Sunday 29th.  We planned the date in consideration of the "calendar of events" of our stork family - so that participants can watch the birds live in the nest before the young storks leave for their first migration journey to Africa.

It will be our seventh meeting, and the second one to last two and a half days, as last year's formula proved to be a great success.  We shall have an introductory gathering on Friday afternoon, and then the plan is to go for an initial outing to nearby meadows to watch storks in their feeding grounds - unless other interesting events happen to occur in the nest itself. In the evening, we will have the opening meeting of all participants at the Przygodzice Parish Culture Centre (GOK).

On Saturday 28th July we plan first to take our guests for a morning walk around Przygodzice village, and then open the conference part of the meeting. This will feature, among others, talks on white and black storks in South Wielkopolska Region, with discussions as well as nature slide shows.

In the evening, we will have a musical performance by a popular local singer Zosia Banaszak, followed by a bonfire.

On Sunday 29th July we shall be leading an extended nature walk through the River Barycz Valley.

As usual, participation in the meeting is free.  This includes sleeping arrangements (group camping style, on comfortable mattresses, in the Culture Centre Hall, with toilets and showers next door).  Individual private (payable) accommodation is also available nearby, in the neighbouring village of Antonin.

We look forward to seeing as many guests as possible, both from all Poland and abroad.  You will be most welcome, and we can promise plenty of interesting sights, information, and stork sightings, and hopefully very enjoyable memories.  A number of our team speak English, so interpretation will always be available.

We hope you will note the date in your diaries and start making your travel arrangements as soon as possible   Please let us know here if you plan to attend - if we know the numbers, it will help us with making  practical seating, catering, and sleeping arrangements. However, even last-minute-decision arrivals will be equally welcome.

We shall be publishing more details of the meeting soon, so watch this space!  For Polish speakers, details also on www.pwg.otop.org.pl .

See you in Przygodzice - the storks are waiting!
