Re: "Close to Storks" project

8th of May, the fourth chick has been hatched. We had not much opportunity to watch hatching as the egg was covered up by the other three chicks.
Now we are looking forward to the hatching of the fifth egg.

Some pictures and videos from 8 May you can see on:

Re: "Close to Storks" project

The news from our nest is not so good...
13th May we lost one from the chicks (the younger) and 14th May the second.

We hope that the another 3 small storks survive.

Videos with the sad moments you can see on:  http://www.bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/vi … 445#p24445

On the picture, one of the parents, dirty and wet from the rain, trying to keep warm his youngs.

Hello everyone,

My wife and I watch the storks from Lexington, Kentucky. USA

We watched with great interest in 2009 and again this year.   It is a wonderful site where we have spent many hours enjoying these spectacular birds.   We are saddened that our stork parents have lost all five babies this year!

While we assume that they became ill and thus too week to survive, we are curious as to why exactly we lost them.  Any thoughts or information will be greatly appreciated.

***
Welcome Rowens, we are very glad to see you in our forum.   Best regards for you and your wife.

I’ll try to explain what happended in ou stork nest.

Very bad weather, heavy rains, and low temperatures for many days caused great difficulties in finding food by the stork parents. [Now, we have a flood in some areas of Poland.]  The youngest chick died on May 13, another one on May 14. On May 17,  the nest and the storks (young and adult) were completely wet; in the middle of the nest a pool of water formed, and when the female got up, it looked like the next chick (third one) does not give any signs of life.

     Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbBboIpKdkQ

Paweł T. Dolata (co-ordinator of the “Close to Storks” Project), with the help of firemen and their equipment (the nest is located on a very high chimney of unused boiler room), decided to a rescue operation, involving the removal of a dead chick, drying of the hole, then filling the nest with a new dry lining (hay). In the meantime, two alive stork babies were dried, and then placed in the nest again.

     Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jyd7-ear8w
(not all the details of the operation are well visible in the movie, because camera picture stopped from time to time due to many entries)

Ten minutes after the end of the operation, the male stork (being away almost 10 hours) returned to the nest and threw both babies at the edge of the nest (probably, he had no food for them and the chicks were too weak to survive).

     Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqKMSzX2ewU

The rescue team returned to the nest immediately, but the small storks were dead.

     Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkGSzRZr4sA

How did the two stork babies look when Paweł approached the nest, you can see on the photos in his article:

     http://www.pwg.otop.org.pl/index.php?fu … all&no=296 .

More videos, here.

Similar tragedies took place in a large number of other stork nests (and not only) in our country. Chicks were dying of starvation, cold and wet, or the parents threw their weakened chicks away or abandoned them (or unhatched eggs) to survive, because they were already utterly exhausted.

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Storks do not lay new eggs after the loss of chicks (after the loss of eggs, yes, it happens). At least, they should not try to reproduce again. But it is not excluded (the storks can surprise us), although it happens very rarely. However, the later the chicks hatch, the smaller the chances of young storks to reach their wintering grounds in Africa … and to survive. After fledging, the youngsters need at least 3-4 weeks to gain more experience in flying and hunting alone. They should start their migration in August or beginning of September, but it is possible only in the case of the storks hatched in May or June.

To traverse the long migratory routes white storks need a good weather and warm, rising air currents, because they are not good fliers, they are gliders rather. This method of flying significantly reduces consumption of their energy and enables them a very long travel. Some of the white storks overcome the route up to 10 000 km, wintering in South Africa.

In this situation, it would be better, if no new eggs appeared in the nest in the present season ...

Hi English-speaking Stork Lovers!

Thanks Damka_Pik for full information.

About long migrations of White Storks, ringed by our team of PwG OTOP in South Wielkopolska (Poland) you can see some recoveries on:
http://www.pwg.otop.org.pl/obro3.php

It is in Polish only, but ring numbers (GDAŃSK …), the names of countries (Republika Południowej Afryki = Republic of South Africa) and coordinates make this text clear for everybody, I hope. All storks were ringed as nestings.

Some part of Polish White Stork population winters in South Africa, rest of them in East and Central Africa, but since 1990s small number od Polish White Storks winter in Israel also.

Re: "Close to Storks" project

Hello!

On Greek website of the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital (EKPAZ) (http://www.ekpazp.gr/multi158/ ) there is my short article about our storks including the story of the male stork, called from last year "Aggressor" (ringed as an adult by Pawel T. Dolata with ELSA tarsus ring last spring).
The text was earlier (25 April) published in Greek (therefore it covers events up to the 5th egg).
Now, it was also translated into English.

The link is: http://www.ekpazp.gr/multi158/index.php … =2&lang=en

Long time now our Storks flew from the nest:
- Male on 17th 08th 2010
- Female 23rd 08th 2010

At www.bociany.ec.pl now you can see other birds such as magpies and jackdaws, which sometimes visit our stork nest.

Hope to meet again White Storks from Przygodzice in spring next year.

Ringing of five White Stork nestlings in Przygodzice – 24th June 2011

Our five young storks from Przygodzice were ringed by the team of South Wielkopolska Group of Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, with a help of a special car with a crane from Volounteer Fire Brigade in Przygodzice, operated by Jerzy Podemski from Volounteer Fire Brigade in Dębnica near Przygodzice.

We took two measurements of our storks. The bill length were: 128, 122 (two firstborns probably), 115, 114, and 104 mm (probably the last hatched nestling). Weights, which are proofs of good condition of these birds, were 4,30; 4,12; 3,62; 3,76 i 3,54 kg respectively.

Some photos from the action, you can find on http://www.bocianyzprzygodzic.pun.pl/vi … hp?id=579, screenshots were made by Asia Dziedziak (semibrevis) and some photos were made by Wojtek Szukalski, one of the action participants.
